The Kunsthalle possesses an extensive collection of regional painting from 1800 to 1950. It consists of 160 works by artists who were born, worked or died in the city. From 2008 to 2011 these paintings were examined by the art historians Katharina Erling and Alice Gudera, together with other authors, in a research project facilitated by the Nicolaus Heinrich Schilling Foundation. Many of the artists had been hardly researched up to now, and certain works have remained unattributed. The results of the project are made publicly available for the first time in the online catalogue of the collection of the Kunsthalle Bremen, and make an important contribution to the reappraisal of regional art history.
