Alberto Giacometti: The Measure of the World
11.10.2025 – 15.02.2026
The first major Alberto Giacometti retrospective in Germany in more than ten years offers a comprehensive overview of the work of the famous Swiss sculptor and painter: From early watercolours and artworks of the Surrealist period to his famous sculptures from the post-War period. The exhibition presents for the first time how intensively Giacometti worked with landscapes – and how these influenced his iconic figures.
Giacometti saw the world in analogies: A tree became a standing woman, a stone a head, a mountain a male bust. Despite living in Paris, his thoughts repeatedly returned to the formative mountain landscapes of his youth in Switzerland. The exhibition for the first time sheds light on how his fascination with the connection between man and nature was also inspired by the ideas of Romanticism.
In a varied presentation, the show presents both outstanding masterpieces and previously unpublished works. Over one hundred works from the holdings of the renowned Fondation Giacometti in Paris are on display – sculptures, paintings, watercolours, drawings and prints as well as documentary material. These important loans are complemented by drawings and prints by Alberto Giacometti from the collection of the Kunsthalle Bremen that have rarely been shown before.
Co-organised by the Kunsthalle Bremen and the Fondation Giacometti, Paris.
