Anton Henning Interieur No. 687

Anton Henning. Interieur No. 687

In 2023, Anton Henning presented a gift of an extensive collection of 24 works to the Kunstverein in Bremen, including small and large-format paintings from all phases of his career. A selection of these works is presented in Interieur No. 687 – arranged by the artist and complemented by wall and reverse glass paintings as well as furniture, which transform the room into a sensual and seductive environment.

In his art, Henning explores past epochs, such as Modernism, Surrealism and Romantic art. His works are provocative, sometimes unsettling in their subtle strangeness. Thus, they open up new perspectives on an art historical canon that is both confirmed and celebrated, but at the same time questioned and criticised. Henning openly debates what is “beautiful” and “museum-worthy”. Visitors are welcome to take a seat on the sofa and explore their own parameters of judgement – or simply soak up the intense colours.
