Pipilotti Rist Pixel Forest Wisera   Opening 6 February 2025

Pipilotti Rist. Pixel Forest Wisera

With Pixel Forest Wisera by Pipilotti Rist (*1962), the Kunsthalle Bremen presents a major new acquisition for the museum’s collection. The installation resembles an enchanted forest that has spread through the museum and invites one to lose oneself in it.

This immersive spatial experience is made possible by almost 3,000 LED lights hanging from the ceiling. They are framed in handmade shapes reminiscent of crystals or stalactites. The lights float in space as if a screen has exploded in the room, the pixels showing no geometric lines or perspectives. Every pixel light has been specially programmed and plays a role in a three-dimensional video which is abstract and cannot be captured in full due to the distance between the pixels. The colour and movement of the video is perfectly aligned with the music one hears in the Pixel Forest. The remaining synchronisation takes place in the minds of visitors where sound and colour mix.

Visitors wandering through Pixel Forest move through the space as if on a dream journey through a video image. The installation created by Pipilotti Rist is reminiscent of the synapses of our brains and also of the flowing colours that can be perceived with closed eyes. The video artist Pipilotti Rist is known for her always unconventional, sensual, sometimes evocative, sometimes dreamlike and meditative works. With the Pixel Forests, which she has been creating since 2016, the artist has found a new way to dissolve the video image and transform it into fascinating spatial installations that are multi-layered in terms of both sensuality and content – they make one want to immerse oneself and linger.

Pixel Forest Wisera is the first Pixel Forest in a German collection. Pixel Forests by Pipilotti Rist can be found in four other collections around the world: at the Kunsthaus Zurich, Ekebergparken in Oslo, the National Museum of Qatar and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The title Wisera is Old High German for Weser, the river where Germany’s first Pixel Forest is located. Rist’s installation was acquired on occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Kunstverein in Bremen (which took place in November 2023) and fabricated exclusively for the Kunsthalle Bremen. For the reopening of the Kunsthalle Bremen after a major extension in 2011, a much-publicised show of Pipilotti Rist’s work was presented at the museum. For the “Ruhig durch die Wände” show, the artist set up the colourful, dreamlike meditative audio-video installation Bremer Lungenflügel (The Bremen Lobe Of The Lung), which had a lasting impact on many visitors.
