Richard Mosse   26.03. – 31.07.2022

Richard Mosse

Born in Kilkenny in 1980, the Irish artist Richard Mosse explores the boundaries between conventional documentary photography and contemporary conceptual art in his photographs and films. In doing so, he focusses on current political and ecological crises such as the civil war in the Democratic Republic of Congo, European refugee and migration policy, and the threat to tropical rainforests in the Amazon.

In his monumental photographs, Mosse uses imaging technology that was originally developed for military and scientific use and makes objects visible that cannot usually be perceived by the human eye. Mosse’s work fluctuates between aesthetics and hot-button political and ethical issues, challenging viewers to explore current crises and the future issues of our time in depth. In 2013, Mosse represented Ireland at the Biennale in Venice and in 2014 he was awarded the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize.

The Richard Mosse exhibition at the Kunsthalle Bremen is the first comprehensive show of his work in Germany. It presents a broad overview of pivotal periods in his oeuvre through representative photographs and a new video installation.
