Rosa Barba: History as a Sculpture

An exhibition of the Supporters’ Circle for Contemporary Art in the Kunstverein Bremen

The work of Rosa Barba (*1972) is distinguished by her conceptual exploration of the medium of film. At the centre is her interest in the relationship between film, space and the viewer. As a result, composition, physicality of form and plasticity play an important role in the perception of her works. Barba’s treatment of film is sculptural. By deconstructing the element of film, she creates kinetic objects and installations in space. Her work is located between experimental documentation and fictional narration, occurring in an undetermined time. Using the camera as a drawing instrument, Barba explores formal shapes and historic connotations to trace places and situations. She uses her own narratives to weave these into fictional accounts that open up new possibilities for interpretation.
